LNG Pilots

HAN Automotive is active in the Interreg project LNG Pilots, which aims at the introduction of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an alternative fuel for heavy duty vehicles and inland shipping. The project consists of multiple topics such as infrastructure, application of bio-LNG and technical solutions. The focus of HAN Automotive is on the development of clean dual-fuel LNG solutions for heavy duty truck applications.


LNG consists mainly of methane, because of its lower carbon content it emits less CO2 compared to that of diesel fuel. The widely available nature of LNG can be an introduction to the usage of bio-LNG. In a dual fuel engine, the gaseous fuel is combusted making use of a small amount of diesel fuel. In this way, the high-efficiency characteristic of the diesel engine is combined with a sustainable fuel resulting in low greenhouse gas emissions. Limitations can be expected in the form of emissions of unburnt methane and knocking phenomenon during combustion. HAN Automotive is working on improving these limits in this project.

Current Status

The dual fuel process has been realised by means of GT-Power engine simulations and a wide range of dyno tests. The emission limitations and the advantages have been depicted, initial solutions for improved emissions and prevention of knocking during combustion have been identified. As high as 80% Gas Energy Ratio (GER) has been reached on an optimal operating point, which means only 20% diesel fuel is required.
