A trend in production technologies within the industries across Europe, desire of the automotive industry to engineer thinner, stronger and lighter constructions and the development in the field of composite materials show strong requirements for “Smart manufacturing”. The Smart Cell project investigates on an automated production cell for the realization of structural composite components which must be produced in large scale or mass produced.


This KIEM Smart Manufacturing project is a research study on the Functional Requirements of an automated production serving the automotive industry as a startup to a "Smart Manufacturing" environment serving composite production. The study would be conducted for about 300 hours by HAN Automotive Research together with the minor “Smart Manufacturing” and two other companies within the fields of composite processing and industrial automation.

During this investigation, we not only focus specifically on research into materials and production (primary processes) for realizing an automated process but also take into consideration the interaction with the (secondary) system that allows automated environment.

Development of automated systems for composite material requires various sensors, actuators, processors and / or logistics systems that must be coupled to each other are referred to as "Data Distribution System" (DDS), to control all kinds of systems and processess.To get an idea how multiple systems work together, we will also use "Plant Simulation Software" from Siemens that provides a three-dimensional image of how systems could best cooperate with each other.

Final Outcomes

The outcome of this project would be a description of the demands and requirements for an automated environment that would be capable to produce composite components in tens of thousands to a million per year, making it a business model for the "Smart Cell". Thus, the research will lead to a record of all the functional requirements for the "Smart Cell" in a "Functional Requirement Document" (FRD) document. This would be the first step towards the realization of the "Smart Cell".
